Campaign trail

We researched the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) website. We are committed to providing more information to students about the CFS and the services they provide. At the National and Provincial level, we will work with CFS to ensure that students needs are addressed in a collaborative manner.

1. We set up our campaign booth at Riddell Hall. There will be student performances all week! Our banners and posters were also made by a student! It's all about the students. Let's get creative and find ways to collaborate with you! Come talk to us and let us know what you want out of your students' association. It is, after all, Your UWSA / Your Needs!

2. We met up with the Aboriginal Student Council (ASC) to introduce ourselves and to seek feedback and consultation on our campaign. The ASC identified their concerns: more open budget consultations and better promotion of UWSA services. We are committed to addressing these issues.

3. Today we talked (and hustled) so many students in front of the Riddell cafeteria.  We gave away chocolate loonies to hit home the message “Your money, Your UWSA, Your needs.”  Below is a list of students we talked to along with their concerns:

Daniel believes that the buss passes could be distributed far more efficiently.  “Instead of waiting in a long line, they should really be mailed out”.  He is running for Community Liaison Director and wants to see this idea become a reality.

Katie believes that there should be more opportunities for service group coordinators to be trained in running and managing their group.  She also thinks that there should be more initiatives towards creating safe and inclusive space just like the Positive Space Campaign.

Victor discussed his concern for his people in Africa.  He started the Kaicombey Foundation for sustainable development student group here on campus.  He wants to connect with those who will help him in his mission build and empower communities through mobilization and fundraising.  Check out the kaicombey foundation online, or email him at kaicombeyfoundation@yahoo.ca

Dene wants to see more advocacy demonstrations on campus.  Instead of just saying we will do something, lets go out and do it just like the kids at Gordon Bell!

Caleigh wants the process of booking tables and rooms to be easier.  She also believes communication between the executive team and the student groups/students could improve.

Ali and his friend are frustrated with the resident’s food plan.  Residents are not allowed to use the stove in their building, and have to buy food from a limited selection in Riddell cafeteria.

Lana visited the disability resource centre and talked to some extremely friendly and knowledgeable individuals.  They explained their concerns about allocating the DRC to the bookstore.  Even though any place other than the basement would be more practical, the bookstore has many flaws.  For one thing, walls cannot be built inside the space because of air duct conflicts.  Without solid walls, privacy and confidentiality become a major concern.

Secondly the student traffic in the hallways is very high at certain times of the day making it difficult for someone in a wheelchair to move around.  This area would also be very noisy which is a frustrating interruption to have to deal with during an exam.  My friends have suggested an option to potentially solve this conflict.  They proposed moving the DRC to the chemistry lab(s) on the first floor Manitoba when it makes the move to the upcoming science complex.  This would eliminate said concerns and allow individuals to be closer to handi transit on balmoral.

Today I talked to Max and he explained why he moved from Holland to Winnipeg.  “I want to become a doctor, and to do that in Holland, I must first learn Latin and then I only can practice in Holland.  In Winnipeg, I am able to complete my studies quicker and have the option of practicing other places.”

We watched the first part of the speeches today and are very proud of those who participated and came out to listen!

We set up our booth in Riddell Hall a little differently today! We were not only promoting our slate but all other candidates in Executive and Director positions as well. We placed the election write-up section of The Uniter at our table so that all students who passed by would be able to read more on other andidates in order to make an informed decision.

The Finance Committee met this evening. Ava spectated in order to listen to discussions pertaining to the 2010/2011 fiscal year's budget and has learned a lot from different student group representatives as well as the UWSA's annual budget.

Your UWSA/Your Needs conversed with students at the Lo Pub in order to connect in a more community-based setting.

Speeches are in Riddell Cafeteria from 12:30-13:30! Make an informed decision!

Jason, Ava, and Lana addressed students at the election forum in Riddell Cafeteria. Students asked very good questions and we have taken into consideration students' feedback.

Gordon Mack and Jordan Baril (students) performed.
