Name: Jason Syvixay
Candidate for: President
Background: Biochemistry (BSc), Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications (BA)
Hometown: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Student life on campus is important. You, as students, should feel welcome and safe at this University; and be better informed about the opportunities and resources available to you.
If re-elected as UWSA President, I will ensure that your students' association is held accountable for your needs. I strongly believe in an equitable environment, conducive to student engagement and involvement.
But it's not about me. It's about what you have to bring to the table. You, have creativity, skill-sets, knowledge, and experience. I want to use my position to connect your abilities within the scope of your students' association – to empower you as students and to foster a shared sense of campus and community life.
I believe in committing fully to this type of change. It is commitment that brings forward constructive results. Wanting change isn't enough; you have to work hard and diligently at it.
My work within the UWSA as President has allowed me to: represent student issues to faculty, administration, & government; improve communication to students about UWSA; improve and recreate logo & website; increase accessibility to education (i.e. daycare expansion); unite student groups through fun/engaging events; and work with creative students (student filmmakers, artists, musicians, etc.). I will continue to work on these goals.

Students,
this is your day.
It
is especially a positive one, because we know that your concerns and
ideas will not be taking lightly. Your needs as students will not be
ignored, not this time.
Not
today.
Today,
you are able to make an informed decision about the students who will
be tasked to represent you. Get involved, research your candidates,
learn about the UWSA – be vocal.
Because.
One
week from now, we will empower you, the students, with 15 UWSA
representatives.
One
week from now, we will have a broader and more robust board of
directors eager to ensure that students' concerns are taken seriously
and student life is of the utmost priority.
One
week from now, you will expect more from your student
representatives.
My
name is Jason Syvixay and I am running for re-election as President
of your students' association.
I
am here for you.
Student
life on campus is important. You should feel welcome and safe at
this university; and be better informed about the opportunities and
resources available to you.
If
re-elected as UWSA President, I will ensure that your students'
association is held accountable for your needs. I strongly believe
in an environment of equality, conducive to student engagement and
involvement.
But
it's not about me.
It's
about what you have to bring to the table. You are creative and
thoughtful individuals, equipped with varying skill-sets, knowledge,
and experience. I will use my position to connect your abilities and
values within the scope of the UWSA – to not only empower you as
students – but to foster a shared sense of campus and community
life.
I
believe in committing fully to this goal.
My
work within the UWSA as President has allowed me to:
-represent
student issues to administration & government
-improve
lines of communication to students
-unite
student groups through engaging events
-and
of course, throw lots of parties and supply tons of beer
Next
year as President, I plan to:
Continue
the positive improvements made by the UWSA.
Continue
to work with creative students such as artists, musicians, and
filmmakers
Continue
to promote and assess the resources currently provided by the UWSA.
The
UWSA represents a broad group of students, and should focus on
celebrating that diversity.
And
we've come such a long way, since 1967, when the UWSA used to be a
jock-strap provider for the Wesmen teams. The UWSA is here to
advocate for you and provide services for you.
Our
student space should look and feel, vibrant and interactive. Our
Bulman Students' Centre should be open, inclusive, and should promote
creative representation – so students feel a sense of ownership
over the university they attend.
Our
student groups should be appropriately supported. As elected
representatives, we need to ensure that we communicate with each
other and find ways to collaborate. We can coordinate accordingly
with other student groups to: effectively bulk-buy merchandise to
alleviate costs, provide meaningful and useful workshops, and by
promoting what each of us have to offer.
Today.
And
one week from now, we can work together on these goals.
Students
set the tone for the UWSA's direction, so please take the time to
learn about what the UWSA has to offer and the candidates running in
this election.
Thank-you
so much.
